About Windermere Lake Cruises
Windermere, England’s biggest natural lake is 10.5 miles long,
one mile wide at its widest point and in places, 200 feet deep.
It not only boasts stunning beauty, but a rich and varied history.
The team at Windermere Lake Cruises are proud to share the lake’s beauty with our welcome visitors, of all ages, from all parts of the globe.
In this section find out more about Windermere Lake Cruises from company history to links to make the most of your visit.

Our journey began in 1845, when the steamship Lady of the Lake first welcomed passengers aboard. Over the years, more iconic vessels joined her, and by 1872 the Furness Railway was carrying visitors and locals alike across Windermere’s sparkling waters.
But the story of the lake goes back even further. For centuries it was a bustling route for trade, from slate and copper to timber, wool and fish. In the early 1800s, sailing packet boats connected communities along its shores.
In the early years of the 19th century White and Gibson of Ambleside operated a sailing packet service. Their vessels carried passengers and general goods between Ambleside, Bowness, the Hawkshead Ferry and Newby Bridge.
